Bio
In my first career I worked as a programmer, software engineer, and computer scientist. For 28 years, I worked on a wide variety of high-level projects, with many of them being R&D projects. My second career was and is the teaching of advanced technology. I have taught computer and information science (CISC) for 27 years. And, I have had the honor and privilege of serving as Department Chair of CISC at San Diego Mesa College for 12 years. The common thread through my first 2 careers has been a steadfast fascination with the nature of awareness and consciousness. I’ve always looked to nature for inspiration and instruction. My adolescent musings upon the conundrum of sentience eventually led me to the study of simulations, neural networks, deep learning, and multi-agent, emergent software systems. Additionally, I’ve studied a fair amount of martial arts—3 years of Aikido, and 10 years of Tai Chi Chuan and Choy Li Fut kung fu. Meditation and body awareness were an important part of my martial arts training. For the last 5 years, I have been engaged in a regular meditation practice that includes, vipassana, samatha, and dzogchen, along with metta, jhana and maranasati. Most recently, I have developed a special interest in the four foundations of mindfulness and the five aggregates.
