Bio
I am the Mindfulness Curriculum Coordinator for the UAB School of Health Professions and the National Center for Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD) and I teach mindfulness meditation to individuals with a mobility disability (traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, etc.). Founded in 1999, the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD) is a public health resource center on health promotion for people with disability. NCHPAD is the premier resource for information on inclusive health, nutrition, fitness and mindfulness – building a nationwide healthcare to wellness journey with people with disabilities. The mission of NCHPAD is to help people with disabilities find accessible programs to enhance their overall health. NCHPAD is located on the Lakeshore campus in Birmingham. For more information on NCHPAD go to www.nchpad.org.
One of the programs offered by NCHPAD is the MENTOR (Mindfulness, Exercise, Nutrition To Optimize Resilience) Program and I am one of the Mindfulness teachers. MENTOR is a program funded by the CDC and it is for anyone in the U.S. with a mobility disability whether it be from an injury or recently acquired disability, or for anyone who is receiving care for a secondary health condition associated with an existing disability, or for anyone who has lived with a disability their entire life and are no longer receiving rehabilitation. MENTOR is a starter wellness program for individuals to learn about physical, mental and emotional/spiritual dimensions of health. MENTOR’S holistic approach is aimed at restoring, improving and protecting health across the individual’s lifespan and strives to bridge the gap between rehabilitation and wellness for individuals. The program focuses on 11 wellness domains which include Minding Your Thoughts and Emotions, Your Spiritual Practice, Self-Care Skills, Core Values, Outdoor Time in Nature, Relationships, Exercise, Contribution to Others, Arts & Leisure, Rest & Relaxation and Diet. It is an 8 -week course on zoom taught by certified mindfulness, nutrition and exercise professionals. NCHPAD sends out exercise equipment to the participants homes to use in the exercise class, as well as cooking equipment for the nutrition class. Participants say they love having the ease of attending class out of their home and having it all in one place. In addition to the mindfulness, nutrition and exercise classes, the participants also have health coaches that meet with them twice a week through the 8- week program with the primary goal of MENTOR being to help participants develop their own self-managed wellness program that includes the mind, body and spirit.
These programs are completely free and really provide individuals with the tools they need to develop a higher quality of life because oftentimes, when people get out of the hospital and out of rehabilitation, they go home and there’s nothing more offered to them in terms of health and wellness and that’s where NCHPAD comes in. For more information on the MENTOR program and other free programs offered by NCHPAD visit www.nchpadconnect.org or call 1-866-866-8896.
