SUMMARY:Buddhist Practice and Plant Medicine with Spring Washam - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:In our first session\, we explored various plant medicines and their potential to support healing as well as examining how these practices intersect with Buddhist teachings—particularly the Five Precepts. [Listen to Session 1 here; Events –>Recordings of Past Events] \n \nIn Session Two\, we’ll build upon this foundation—deepening our understanding and turning toward practical skill-building. We’ll focus on how to support students with accurate information and how to offer compassionate integration support for those returning from a psychedelic journey. \n \nThe use of plant medicine and psychedelics is rapidly gaining traction in the mental health field\, showing promising outcomes for emotional and psychological healing\, including deep trauma.  \n \nAs mindfulness and meditation teachers\, it is essential that we stay informed about these emerging modalities to better serve our communities and those we work with. \n \nThis session is from 12 – 3 pm ET ; Zoom link is here \n \n(Please note this is a date change from September 6; we apologize for any inconvenience from the change) \n \nLearn more about Spring Washam here.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness and Healing the Heart of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:A special invitation for all alumni from RISE Sangha which has been co-leading a series this past spring on Mindfulness and Healing the Heart of Democracy with the Center for Contemplative Practices and Transformative Educational Leadership.  This special session is being held for all alumni. \n  \nBased on the work of Parker Palmer and as well as other dharma sources\, we will explore ways how mindfulness may serve to keep our experiment of democracy alive– \nwithin our own hearts and the communities in which we serve. We will attend to both the Inner and Outer Games: \n\nHow do we\, as citizens and leaders\, stay hopeful\, resourced\, inspired and engaged?\nHow do we create spaces to facilitate others in cultivating their habits of heart in order to foster a more mindful\, compassionate\, thoughtful community and world?\nHow do we remain faithful to speaking/ listening in a way that takes us closer to truth; to the call of courage that summons us to be witness to the common good\, even against great odds?\n\n  \n“Many of us have a shared experience of heartbreak about the condition of our culture and society\, a yearning for something better than divisiveness\, toxicity\, passivity\, and powerlessness. \nWithin us is the courage to pursue that yearning\, to hold life’s tensions consciously\, until they break us open. This shared heartbreak builds a footbridge of mutual understanding on which we walk toward each other.  \nThe broken-open heart is a source of power as well as compassion—the power to bring down whatever diminishes us and raise up whatever serves us well.”  -Parker Palmer \n \nThis session is from 12 – 1:30 pm ET;  the zoom link is here  \n  \nNote: This is a stand-alone event which is related to a fall series of RISE sangha meetings in which we explore in greater depth five Habits of Heart to build our capacity for wise view\, loving awareness\, compassion\, and skillful engagement in the world. These five habits are:1) We’re All in This Together\, 2) An Appreciation of Otherness\, 3) A Capacity to Hold Tension Creatively\, 4) A Sense of Voice and Agency\, 5) A Capacity to Create Community.  Please join RISE Sangha for more information.

SUMMARY:Workshop |Trauma-Informed Foundations of Mindfulness with Amma Thanasanti
DESCRIPTION:(this event rescheduled from June 14)  \n \nA 3-hour experiential workshop with Amma Thanasanti \n \nThe Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipaṭṭhāna) are among the most revered early teachings the Buddha offered—a time-tested\, profound path to insight and liberation. Yet for many of us—and for those we guide—traditional meditation instructions can sometimes feel inaccessible or even dysregulating\, especially in the presence of unresolved trauma or heightened nervous system activation. \n \nIn this 3-hour live session\, we’ll explore how to approach the Four Foundations through both classical and trauma-informed lenses. You’ll learn practical ways to support yourself and those you teach with mindfulness tools that prioritize safety\, attunement\, and choice while teaching mindfulness of the body\, feeling tones (vedanā)\, mind states\, and dhammas. We’ll also look at how trauma and nervous system activation changes the way we practice with the hindrances and the 4 Noble Truths.  \n \nWhether you’re tending to your own nervous system or offering support to others\, this session offers grounded\, integrated practices that connect classical dharma with somatic and trauma-aware tools to increase our clarity\, resilience\, and compassion for the complexity of these times. \nThis workshop is from 12 – 3 pm ET; Zoom link is here  \n \nAbout Amma ThanasantiAmma Thanasanti has been practicing meditation for nearly 50 years\, including 26 years as a Theravāda Buddhist nun—20 of them in the Ajahn Chah Forest Tradition. She’s been teaching since 1989\, leading retreats since 1996\, and has served as a mentor for MMTCP for 3 cohorts. \nHer years of monastic life showed her the depth and beauty of insight practices\, while also revealing their limits when it comes to early conditioning and trauma. This led Amma to integrate neuroscience and trauma-informed modalities into her teaching—offering a path that weaves physical and psychological well-being into the path of awakening.
